Our Organization is the author of the seminal report “Turning the Tide: Strategies to Halve Plastic Waste by 2030.” The paper provides a thorough road map for significantly lowering plastic pollution worldwide by combining corporate social responsibility, regulatory changes, and neighborhood-based waste management initiatives.
The report, developed with input from leading environmental scientists, economists, and waste management experts, highlights the following key strategies:
- Global Plastics Treaty: Promoting a worldwide agreement that holds companies responsible for the creation of single-use plastics and imposes targets for reducing plastic waste.
- Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR): Urging countries to enact EPR laws that place the cost of waste management on manufacturers in order to motivate them to create packaging that is more environmentally friendly.
- Circular Economy Models: encouraging the shift to a circular economy, where goods are made to be recycled, repaired, and reused, from a linear “take-make-waste” model.
“Plastic waste is one of the most pressing environmental crises of our time, but with the right mix of policies, innovation, and public will, we can turn the tide,” said John Daniels, Director of Marine Conservation. “This report provides a clear pathway to achieving significant reductions in plastic pollution, protecting both our oceans and our health.”
The report also includes case studies of successful plastic waste reduction efforts in cities such as Amsterdam, Kigali, and San Francisco, where innovative waste management systems and consumer education have led to measurable decreases in plastic pollution.
