Our Background
We were established in 2007 by a group of environmentalists with the straightforward but audacious objective of undoing the harm brought about by decades of industrial growth and environmental neglect. Our founders understood the critical need for a worldwide organization that could tackle the underlying causes of environmental deterioration. They came from a range of fields, including biology, environmental research, law, and community organizing.
We have developed into a prominent voice in the environmental field over the years, advocating for laws that lower carbon emissions, save endangered species, and advance sustainable development on continents across the world. We are now a driving force behind positive environmental change, with offices in more than 25 countries and collaborations with local communities, governments, and other NGOs. Through clean energy and sustainable agriculture, we have improved lives, saved species, and preserved forests, all of which demonstrate our effect.
Our vision is a world where human societies and ecosystems coexist harmoniously, where natural resources are handled wisely, and where everyone can benefit from a healthy environment.
Our goals are to empower communities, restore ecosystems, and push for laws that protect biodiversity, combat climate change, and uphold environmental justice.
Milestones:
- 2009: Oversaw the first nationwide initiative in Cambodia to phase out single-use plastics, which reduced plastic waste by 35% in the first year.
- The Endangered Species Recovery Fund was established in 2014 and has since awarded more than $5 million in grants to regional conservation groups defending critically endangered species like the African elephant, Sumatran tiger, and vaquita porpoise.
- 2020: We achieved a significant milestone in our worldwide reforestation initiative by planting one million trees in deforested areas across five continents, assisting in the restoration of vital habitats and the slowing down of climate change.
